Text Box: Thursday August 12, 2010 4:00 - 6:00 PM Text Box: ABOUT THE FALLS: The I&M will continue the theme from our last meeting in July by touring the Upper Saint Anthony Falls Lock and Dam, located on the Mississippi River, at mile 853.9 in Minneapolis. Construction of this lock and dam was completed in September, 1963. The dam consists of a horseshoe dam with a chord dam downstream of the horseshoe along with a concrete overflow spillway owned by Xcel Energy. The lock is 56 feet wide by 400feet long. ABOUT THE TOUR: The tour will cover the following: The history of St. Anthony Falls; the ‘water fall that built a city’, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ role in preserving the falls. The Upper Mississippi lock and dam system, and the unique characteristics of this region of the river. How a lock and dam functions, and unique features of the USAF L&D. There is free visitor parking on site. The Corps of Engineers maintains two parking lots.
