ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Jeff DeZellar is a Program Manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District. In this role, Jeff is responsible for several major ecosystem restoration programs focusing on the Upper Mississippi River. He currently manages the Environmental Management Program, which has constructed numerous islands and other ecosystem projects for habitat improvement on the Upper Miss. These projects create new fish and wildlife habitat to help mitigate the effects of the lock and dam system.
One of Jeff’s other main responsibilities is manager of the St. Paul District’s Water Level Management Program, which includes pool-scale drawdown for ecosystem restoration. He managed the 2005 and 2006 drawdowns of navigation Pool 5, which led to a dramatic vegetation response, to the benefit of fish and wildlife. This project was recognized with the Seven Wonders of Engineering Award from the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers in 2007, and the Corps’ Chief of Engineers Environmental Merit Award and National Design Team of the Year in 2008. Working with a vibrant multi-stakeholder partnership, Jeff has assisted in developing a strong public outreach and awareness program about water level management, including numerous articles and interviews, and a podcast with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Jeff was deployed for disaster response for the flooding in Iowa in 2008, and the flooding on the Red River of the North in Fargo/Moorhead in 2009, serving as a public affairs officer.
Text Box: Previously, Jeff managed the environmental compliance and hazardous materials management program for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, a regional water agency with over 25 million customers. He also conducted biological and endangered species studies, and hazardous waste remediation projects for the Los Angeles District Corps of Engineers. Jeff began his professional career in 1974 with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Jeff is a registered professional engineer (civil) in Minnesota and California.
